Today I’m continuing my round-up from this year’s 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen with a look at Echoes of Texture – a joint exhibition from Danish rug maker Linie Design and Japan-based furniture and lifestyle brand Karimoku Case.

I’ll be honest: I knew little about Linie Design before my visit, and it was Karimoku Case’s name that originally drew me to the exhibition. But its beautiful range of handcrafted rugs instantly captured my attention and it ended up being one of my favourite discoveries from the festival.

It turns out Linie has been going since 1980, primarily producing rugs for other companies before shifting its focus towards designing and selling collections under its own name. It opened its brand store (where the exhibition took place) in a stunning period townhouse on Bredgade in the heart of the Danish capital in 2024, and its rugs are now available in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Styled by Pernille Vest, Echoes of Texture represented an elegant fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism and craftsmanship. Throughout, rugs were displayed vertically like artworks – sometimes hanging on walls, sometimes suspended from bespoke wooden frames reminiscent of torii gates. They formed an elegant, tactile backdrop for a selection of pared-back chairs, tables and benches by Karimoku Case – a joint venture from Norm Architects, Tokyo studio Keiji Ashizawa and Japanese manufacturer Karimoku that I’ve featured in several blog posts over the years.

The exhibition also marked the debut of a new rug collection created by Norm Architects and Linie’s Head of Design Urd Moll Gundermann. Called ‘Woven Matter’, it also takes inspiration from Japan, evoking the tranquillity, rhythm, stillness and movement of the country’s buildings, landscapes and art. Like all Linie pieces, it’s responsibly made by artisan weavers in India using natural materials such as wool, linen and jute, with hand-carded yarn woven into the surfaces to add texture and depth.

Some of the rugs in the collection have a calm precision to them, reflecting the order and intentionality behind Japanese architecture. These include ‘Poetic Grid’, which uses blocks of texture to create an interplay between repetition and pause, and ‘Woven Tatami’ and ‘Calm Seki’, both of which echo the lines, arrangement and texture of tatami floor mats (all shown above). Others (below) are more organic and asymmetric in their expression. ‘Flow Shen’, for example, is adorned with flowing curves that weave their way across its surface like tree branches or rivulets of rain. ‘Still Horizon’, meanwhile, is an abstract composition of lines and fragments of shapes that speak of rippling water, wind-blown sand and weather-sculpted rock.

My personal favourite is ‘Still Aya’, which incorporates tiny perforations arranged in a grid-like pattern. It has a rustic yet refined aesthetic, and I can see it sitting beautifully on a contrasting dark-wood or microcement floor. I also love the look of ‘Faded Noren’, which takes its cue from traditional noren fabric dividers fluttering in doorways along the alleyways of Kyoto. It’s bisected by a single line inspired by the slits cut in noren to allow for entry, with muted tones that suggest sun- and season-faded fabric.
